SPICE Project- The Special Project for the Implementation of Children's Elections

Involving children and young people making decisions and changes in their areas!

SPICE began in 2001 when Derwentside District Council decided that they wanted to involve children and young people in Council decision making. Since then SPICE have worked with children and young people in Derwentside to:

  • Involve them in making important decisions
  • Making sure that they are involved in their community
  • Help them to have their RIGHT to be involved in ANY decision that affects their life and be taken SERIOUSLY
  • Support them to understand how the Council works
  • Encourage them to get involved in positive activities

Many of SPICE's achievements have been through the Young People's Forum, known as the YPF, which is a group of children and young people between 8 and 19 who were elected by other young people in elections- you can find out more about the YPF on this page.

Through the YPF's hard work SPICE now has a mobile youth bus and a rewards scheme running in schools known as SPICETACULAR- you can find out more about these projects on the pages of this site!

ANY child or young person can get involved in SPICE in some way!!
